May 5th: Havasupai hike continued...
Once beyond the switchbacks at mile 2 our happy group kept hiking...
...and hiking...
...and hiking.
We saw pretty trees in the middle of our path.
Interesting rocks too.
Throughout our hike several mule trains passed by. They were heading up to the rim to get hiker's backpacks & village supplies. Definitely get out of the way of these guys...or else. ;-)
We took regular breaks to have some snacks. Everyone was feeling GREAT!
It's really a pretty hike!
High red canyon walls. Love this section.
We were lucky that the majority of our 9 miles to the village was in shade.
Strolling into Supai village...feet & legs growing weary. We had a nice break in the town while we checked in at registration. Everyone had some PB&J before marching 2 more miles to the campground!
Along our path to camp we came across the lower pools of New Navajo Falls. The swimming holes looked so refreshing & we saw many cooling off in the water. Hidden from our view while walking were the large falls of New Navajo (we'll hike back later in the day to explore them & swim).
Another 3/4 mile of walking & we all round the corner to see Havasu Falls! WOW!! By far it's the most impactful experience when you 1st view these amazing falls & turquoise water. Adding to that experience is the fact that we've just hiked several hours over dusty, rocky trails. It's just hard to believe that we could possibly see this. Is it a mirage!?
We take many group shots & selfies from this point before making our way into the campground.
Well hello there good mules and horseys! Thank you for carrying some of our gear.
Setting up our tents & camping area is part of the backpacking experience. We scouted out a couple tent sights & I honestly think we found one of the best spots in the campground. Yay!
Our campground had a private spot next to Havasu Creek! Perfect for soaking tired feet & legs! And great for washing up dishes & ourselves later.
How 'bout a siesta before we swim!?
I like our home for the next 2 days!
Wake up, Mike! :-)
This pic was from the next morning. This is how we gathered for breakfast & supper. It's entertaining to see & test everyone's freeze-dried meals; a fun part of the backpacking adventure.

Photos in the next post will be of Friday afternoon's water fall excursion.
