Mt. Antero

Bob & I summited Mt. Antero today & gained a friend...Mila the dog! She was a good pup & made us miss Harley. Here's how our day went down...
We set the alarm in our tent for 4am & drove a rugged 4 wheel drive road to the trailhead. It was a cold start at sunrise.
This mountain is different from most 14ers with old mining roads being 90% of the route. The other 10% (near the top) is a narrow trail & rock scramble.
Bob & I enjoyed the contrast from other mountains.
Me spotting 2 hikers ahead (see them?).
Here's where the road ends & the smaller trail begins. Mt. Antero peak behind me.
And there's Bob on top of that peak!
Mt. Antero is my 25th different 14er!
Mt. Antero is Bob's 16th! There are 58 in Colorado.
It sure is fun to hike these mountains together. We had a beautiful day too...love the blue sky!
And love the view. We could see Mt. Princeton to the north and Mt Shavano & Tebeguache Peak (14ers) to the south. All 3 of which we haven't climbed, yet...(maybe next year)!
1 more summit shot...
and down we go.
Bob pointing to the many switchbacks we have to hike down...
...until this nice couple on ATVs came along. Lucky for us & a 14er first, they gave us a ride down on those ATVs. 3 miles down the switchbacks we were returned to our car. It was a thrill & a fun visit with these folks. I guess these mining roads can come in handy. ;-)
WOW..the ATV's were the perfect way to get back to the car...again beautiful scenery!
ReplyDeleteThe ATV was a nice addition to our 14er routine. I'm sure that won't happen again. :-)
