Me: Day 1 of a 2 day backpacking trip to summit Snowmass Mountain. This trip was a doozy! We dropped off Harley at doggie camp at noon, grabbed lunch in Basalt which took entirely too long (so we got a later hike start then we wanted - 3pm). We had 8.4 miles to Snowmass Lake (our camping spot) and the weather looked good so we weren't too worried. We parked at 8,380 ft and set out through the Aspen trees. BTW, Bob's pack wins the prize for being the heaviest. He did have to carry 1/2 my stuff though (sorry Bob). My pack was conveniently too small to fit everything. :-)
Today's route was on pretty smooth trail & not too steep. The Aspens were thick!
Pretty green meadow but it looks like rain ahead.
The FAR mountain in the middle is Snowmass Peak (13,620 ft.). Snowmass Mountain (the one we're climbing at 14,092 ft) is to the right of that but not in view). We have a LONG ways to go today & tomorrow!
The rain did come and so we set up our tent by Snowmass Creek (2 miles short of today's intended destination). Bummer, because that will add on 4 total extra miles onto an already big day tomorrow.
Lucky that our camping spot was next to the stream. We were able to use the water purifier to replenish our water supply and cook dinner. Freeze dried Beef Stroganoff for Rich and 3 cheese pasta for Bob and I. Freeze dried ice cream sandwich for desert. All pretty tasty!
With the rain coming down we took shelter in the tent and went to bed early. We'll be up at 5am tomorrow to start hiking!
From what you posted on FB is sounds like you had a very trying climb....you and Bob look so good in the last picture....freeze dried ice cream sandwich...never heard of that, but anything that has ice cream in the name must be good. More adventures to come???
