3-4-12

Today we took the ferry to Hamilton Island to spend the day. Hamilton Island is one of the 74 islands in The Whitsundays. Only 8 of these islands are inhabited with a total of 9 resorts.
Over 70% of Hamilton Island is national parkland and it has 20km of bushwalking trails. There are no cars on Hamilton Island but there are golf carts which are transportation for guests and residents. Side note: Hamilton is the island Oprah stayed on when she visited The Whitsundays.
We stopped in Koala Cafe to admire this guy sleeping. He's cute.
Catseye Beach where a few vacationers were out on catamarans and paddle boards.
We found a shady spot to relax and hung out here all day. Had lunch, fruity drinks and swam in the warm, clear blue water. We had a good time finding a bunch of live sand dollars while swimming.
Our grass hut was strategically set in front of this 5 star resort, The Beach Club, where we "borrowed" their pool for the afternoon.
Kinda felt like we were living the lifestyle of the rich and famous! What a setting and we pretty much had the place to ourselves.
This photo shows how much the tide goes out in the late afternoon. Maybe a 1/4 mile.
After our chill afternoon we walked up the hill to an island lookout. The adjacent island is Whitsundy Island where Whitehaven Beach is.

We took the 4:30pm ferry back to Airlie Beach and enjoyed an awesome fish & chips dinner from Fish D'Vine. Thanks for the great restaurant recommendation, Martin!

  2. Hi Karen -

It has been amazing! Tonight is our last night in Australia. We're in Sydney again now and staying in the city with Martin and his family. Have to pay for internet in the hotels we've been at so have not been able to update the blog much. Just checking e-mail now before heading out to sight see some more. We'll be in the states tomorrow. Love, Jane
